Because we NC's find it relevant, interesting, and in some cases, vital to the continued success of our sites............replicate this on your site, and your members will keep flocking back..........but remember.........it will be largely down to you as the NC/Admin team to promote aspects of your pages that might have been forgotten about or that are fresh & new.
Broadcast messages are an important feature to use, and i advocate the use of them as a newsletter on a weekly basis, but NOT a daily basis, due to the perception of blitzing your members/SPAM generation.........this is also important............over use something..........and its usefulness is replaced by the perception that it is just "SPAMMIMG" and therefore, when you DO have an important subject to convey, it will be lost in the cyber-junk pile of your members email!!
How many times do you see REPEATED occasions on these forums, where an NC has replicated the same question that has been asked a ton of times before.........in the event they don't look around, all you need to reply with (whilst closing the discussion) is "this has been covered in XYZ post/blog/article"...................This then puts the focus BACK on the main thread that has been originally put together, and where all of the relevant replies will have been placed.
I know i may have drifted slightly off topic here, but, the message i am trying to convey is that, make your pages tooooo "spidery" with no coherant guide, and your members will be confused, bored, and will ultimately find somewhere less intensive to use............likewise, bombard them with (in their eyes) irrelevant information every day, and they might well become "saturated" with the "information overload" scenario and switch off...........regardless of how much good stuff you are doing.........simplicity, perspective of relevance, and usefulness rules!!!"
